CHALLENGE
Creating a minimalist home on a compact site required balancing simplicity with warmth. The client requested a space that felt calm, open, and tactile, without feeling sterile. The challenge lay in integrating personal expression and comfort into a clean-lined design that felt intimate, practical, and visually harmonious throughout.
PROCESS
We designed around internal courtyards and controlled sightlines to promote openness. Natural light, soft plaster finishes, and timber details added visual softness. The spatial layout prioritized ease of movement and multifunctional use, while custom storage and muted tones enhanced both utility and the overall quiet, contemplative atmosphere.
01. PLANNING & PERMITS
The home was arranged around inward-facing courtyards to ensure privacy and natural light. This inward focus offered quiet garden views and a meditative atmosphere. The form hugged the edges of the plot, maximizing useable outdoor space while minimizing exposure to neighboring properties.
02. SITE PREPARATION
The interior was designed with gentle transitions instead of walls. Small level shifts, ceiling recesses, and material changes subtly defined spaces. This fluid movement made the compact floor plan feel expansive. Circulation was intuitive, supporting both personal retreat and communal interaction within a seamless flow
03. STRUCTURAL DESIGN
Materials emphasized warmth and simplicity. Smooth clay-toned plaster, light timber, and linen textiles were used to evoke softness. These choices offered a tactile, lived-in feel while supporting visual calmness. The restrained palette avoided clutter, letting light and texture define the atmosphere organically.
04. INTERIOR & EXTERIOR
Skylights, clerestory windows, and vertical slits introduced diffused light throughout. These features created shifting moods during the day and enhanced spatial clarity. Lighting emphasized the home’s serenity without harsh contrasts, offering visual comfort while highlighting textures and the quiet elegance of the space.
RESULT
Terra Residence feels calm, grounded, and effortlessly functional. Its restrained material palette and open layout support mindful living while maintaining warmth and elegance. The result is a personalized home where minimalism doesn't feel empty — but instead expressive, refined, and in harmony with both lifestyle and environment.
